New Work & Video: [There's A Lion in the House]

I recently had the pleasure of completing my largest lion collage to date! It's about 22” x 30” and I used assorted acid-free, Color-Aid, and magazine papers, plus gold leaf. It took about a month from start to finish. It was a request from a client in Canada.
This is my first video of me talking about my process, so thanks ahead of time for your patience. Lots to improve for next time! This is Kelly's website. I've learned a lot from her book and blog!

Women's Work: Unique Visions By Women
Springboard Art Show at the Clifton Arts Center, Clifton, NJ • Through March 28th

Picture

It’s an honor for all of us to show our work at the Clifton Arts Center Center (cliftonartscenter.org) during “Women’s History Month”! It's a joy for me to be part of this group of unique, beautiful, and incredibly talented  women!! I showed some older work ("Three Girls", 1985, "Blue Crab" 2006, and "Fuzz 'N Bunny and the Jellybean Tree" 2010 (www.kathleenrupff.com/childrens.html), along with some new mixed media pieces. Here's some local press about the show: thecliftontimes.com/g/clifton-nj/n/242920/commemorating-womens-history-clifton-arts-center. A video crew from the Clifton cable station was there to record us talking about our work. What?! :)  CLICK HERE for the video!

Below are some shots from the opening last Saturday and some close-ups of my work on display. (Thanks Jenn and Liz for sharing your photos!)  Below are links to the Springboard websites:

Two new pieces in show

Recently, I've been taking formally completed pieces and embellishing them with paper collage with 3d effects, giving them a totally new look. It's been a lot of fun to transform the into something 'new' and I'm thrilled with them! Regarding these two pieces, I'm intrigued by the wisdom of trees, the lovely life they give and hold within their branches, and the joy they bring through the different seasons.

These are some older pieces in the show...

Though my current emphasis is on digital painting, my roots are firmly in traditional media. I made the acrylic painting, "Irises" while taking a class at the Baum School of Art in Allentown, PA (2009). It was inspired by local Warren County irises. "Three Tomatoes" was completed around 2012 while taking an oil painting class with Lena Shiffman. "Blue Crab" was completed while taking a watercolor class while I was living in Delaware (2006). I made "Three Girls" during college. The blond-haired girl with her back to the viewer represented my friend Sarabeth, a good friend of mine. I was experimenting with flowy lines and the theme of friendship. Friends are such a gift and the love and support a friend offers during difficult times is invaluable. I also love the golden light before dusk at the beach and was trying to capture that as well.

"The Power of a Seed" Illustration & prayer

Picture
This is an illustration I made a few weeks ago. It's called "The Power of a Seed".  Prayer: "Lord, Thank you that during this dark time, you are drawing us to yourself, the Light-- our true Light. Give us eyes to see and ears to hear from You. Thank you that You alone are the source and supply of everything we need. We rest and receive from You - your approval, acceptance, shalom, wholeness, wisdom, all provision. Thank you that YOU are our everything and reveal yourself to us as such. Thank you that as we continue to receive your anointed Word and love, it brings forth a harvest of much fruit in us and for us, and for those around us, that YOU're glorified. Amen!"

Can you pick out the 'real' bunny?

An excerpt from "The Velveteen Rabbit,"
also called "How Toys Become Real,"
a children's novel by Margery Williams and
illustrated by William Nicholson
Picture
“Weeks passed, and the little Rabbit grew very old and shabby, but the Boy loved him just as much. He loved him so hard that he loved all his whiskers off, and the pink lining to his ears turned grey, and his brown spots faded. He even began to lose his shape, and he scarcely looked like a rabbit any more, except to the Boy. To him he was always beautiful, and that was all that the little Rabbit cared about. He didn’t mind how he looked to other people, because the nursery magic had made him Real, and when you are Real shabbiness doesn’t matter.”

Day 1228:  A Photo A Day • Trip to PA Capitol Building

4/19/2018

I recently attended an incredible guided tour of the Pennsylvania Capitol Building in Harrisburg, PA with the Eastern PA Branch of the Society of Children's Book Writers & Illustrators. The capital is amazingly beautiful!
(Unfortunately, I forgot my camera, so these shots were taken with my flip phone.)
Picture
"The Capital was designed in the American Renaissance style by Philadelphia architect Joseph Huston, who envisioned the building as a 'Palace of Art'."  (Text from brochure)
Picture
View from the gallery of the House Chamber, featuring the 35 feet square mural, "The Apotheosis of Pennsylvania" by Edwin Austin Abbey
Picture
"Architect John Huston borrowed the Capital Rotunda's features from the Paris Opera House, including the Grand Staircase and three-tiered gallery."
Picture
In 1902 Violet Oakley was the first woman artist to receive a large commission for adorning a capitol building in the United States. Her incredible forty-three murals (created over 25 years) are breathtaking!
Picture
"Designed and manufactured by Henry Chapman Mercer (1856-1930) of Doylestown, the floor is interspersed with close  to 400 mosaics illustrating the state's history, animals, industries, occupations, and modes of transportation."
Picture
"When Theodore Roosevelt attended the dedication of the building on October 4, 1906, he said,
'This is the handsomest building I ever saw.'"
We also got to meet and visit the studios of  Jonathan Bean and Lauren Castillo, two incredibly talented, award-winning authors and illustrators at  The Millworks.   Here are a few of their book covers (below).

It was a fun and inspiring trip, and has me interested in writing/illustrating children's books again!
