"The Power of a Seed" Illustration & prayer

This is an illustration I made a few weeks ago. It's called "The Power of a Seed".  Prayer: "Lord, Thank you that during this dark time, you are drawing us to yourself, the Light-- our true Light. Give us eyes to see and ears to hear from You. Thank you that You alone are the source and supply of everything we need. We rest and receive from You - your approval, acceptance, shalom, wholeness, wisdom, all provision. Thank you that YOU are our everything and reveal yourself to us as such. Thank you that as we continue to receive your anointed Word and love, it brings forth a harvest of much fruit in us and for us, and for those around us, that YOU're glorified. Amen!"

Can you pick out the 'real' bunny?

An excerpt from "The Velveteen Rabbit,"
also called "How Toys Become Real,"
a children's novel by Margery Williams and
illustrated by William Nicholson
Picture
“Weeks passed, and the little Rabbit grew very old and shabby, but the Boy loved him just as much. He loved him so hard that he loved all his whiskers off, and the pink lining to his ears turned grey, and his brown spots faded. He even began to lose his shape, and he scarcely looked like a rabbit any more, except to the Boy. To him he was always beautiful, and that was all that the little Rabbit cared about. He didn’t mind how he looked to other people, because the nursery magic had made him Real, and when you are Real shabbiness doesn’t matter.”

I loved Joan Walsh Anglund's books as a child, and still do. She's one of my favorite poets and illustrators!

Thought I'd experiment with some quick illustrations.
Sketched this in pencil, then scanned it in Photoshop to tweak and 'color'....Tweak, tweak!

One of Ame's recent books!
I attended the NJ SCBWI Picture Book Word Count Smack Down Workshop with Ame Dyckman in Princeton, NJ yesterday!

In addition to being a super-talented author, Ame is one of the funnest, most thorough, creative and helpful presenters I've ever heard (plus a SUPER-nice person))!!  If you ever have a chance to meet her or hear her speak, don't miss it!  Better yet, buy her books (or check them out from the library!  :)

Also present was the ever-wonderful and uber-talented illustrator, entrepreneur, and NJ Chapter Regional Advisor, Leeza Hernandez. Her readings of the participant's PB stories made everything sound good!!

SOME HIGHLIGHTS FROM THE WORKSHOP:
Ame's "Stylin' Moves for Wrestling Your World Count"
1. SMACK unnecessary backstory
2. Jump in with the action
3. Avoid stage direction
4. KAPOW! descriptive and filler words (including your dialogue)
5. SMASH redundancies (ex. sit down)
For her link to Richard Nordquist's 200 common redundancies click here!

Ame's 3 Secret Tricks to Reducing your word count:
1. Use Twitter (140 words)
2. Listen to kids
3. Carry your picture book manuscript in your pocket at all times!

If you want to learn more about children's book writing and illustrating, check your local SCBWI Chapter for events near you!  :)
